Boil Water Advisory Issued for City of Walsenburg –
5th Street and Areas North of 5th Street

If you are in need of water, please contact Huerfano County Dispatch at (719) 738-1044.

On Thursday, February 2, 2023, Walsenburg, CO – The City of Walsenburg issued a Boil Water Advisory for 5th Street and the areas North of 5th Street. The Las Animas Huerfano Counties District Health Department (LAHCDHD) is working with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), City of Walsenburg and Huerfano County to mitigate this event and share awareness.

Those in the area should observe the following precautions until further notice:

  • If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run for one (1) minute.
  • Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.
  • Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic ice maker. If using an automatic ice maker flush three (3) before using.
  • Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.
  • Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.

The advisory took effect February 2, 2023, and will remain in effect until conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. The City of Walsenburg and CDPHE issued the advisory due to a loss of pressure. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

For more questions, please contact the Las Animas Huerfano Counties District Health Department, 719-846-2213 and ask for Robin Sykes, Env. Health Director or Aaron Chavez, Env. Health Specialist or visit the LAHCDHD Website or on Facebook for further details.
