Vital Records: Birth & Death Certificates

The Vital Statistics Office provides certified birth and death certificates for individuals who meet the eligibility requirements under Colorado law.


Certificate Fees

  • $20.00 – First certified copy

  • $13.00 – Each additional copy of the same record when ordered at the same time


Services Available

  • Birth Certificates:
    We can issue birth certificates for anyone born anywhere in Colorado.

  • Death Certificates:

    • For deaths from 1976 to present: Available through our county offices for any death that occurred in Colorado*

    • For deaths from 1910 to 1975: Please contact the county where the death occurred or the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment in Denver

⏱️ *Please allow 72 hours for death records from other counties to be added to the state system. Once processed, we can issue the certificate electronically.

Record Availability

Our offices in Las Animas and Huerfano Counties maintain official birth and death records dating back to 1910. These certified records are legal documents accepted for:

  • Passports

  • Travel

  • School enrollment

  • Driver’s license applications

  • And other official purposes


Important Notice

Vital records—including birth, death, adoption, marriage, and divorce—are confidential under Colorado Revised Statutes § 25-2-117. They are not public records and cannot be searched online.

Only individuals who meet eligibility requirements may access these documents.

Ways to Get a Certified Copy of a Birth or Death Certificate

  • In person: You will need to fill out a short request application (Birth or Death) and present a current, valid photo ID. See this list of valid Photo IDs. Our office hours for walk-in vital statistics request are M-F 8:00am-4:30pm. No appointments are necessary . Most request can be fulfilled within 10 mins
  • Mail to: Print and fill out the application (Birth or Death). Attach a copy of your current, valid photo ID. See this list of valid Photo IDs.

  • You may also send your application and required documents via email or upload them via our webform.

  • OR Online: Through VitalChek or GoCertificates (third party partners) -You'll verify your identity through their online tools. A surcharge applies in addition to the cost of the certificate. (order is then fulfilled through the State Vitals office in Denver)
