Change the Narrative Campaign
Purpose and Overview
Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is a chronic yet treatable condition that affects the brain and behavior. Opioids include prescription medications and illicit drugs such as heroin and fentanyl.
Our goal is to raise awareness about SUD, reduce stigma, and promote local, community-based strategies for prevention, treatment, and recovery.
The opioid crisis continues to impact families and communities across the country, especially in rural and underserved areas.
Our goal: Provide data, raise understanding, change the narrative, and share solutions.
What is Substance Use Disorder (SUD)?
Substance Use Disorder (SUD) refers to the inability to control the use of a particular substance—including drugs or alcohol—despite harmful consequences. SUD impacts individuals, families, and entire communities. Understanding the scope and drivers of substance use helps us act early and effectively.
Young people who begin using alcohol or drugs early are more likely to develop lasting health problems. Family, social environment, and access to support all influence the risk of developing a substance use disorder.
Key Facts
- Starting before age 15 makes youth five times more likely to develop substance use disorder.
- Teen years are the most vulnerable for substance initiation.
- Injection drug use increases risk of HIV and overdose.
- Early use of opioids and alcohol is linked to sexual risk behaviors and violence.
