Change the Narrative Campaign
Purpose and Overview
Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is a chronic yet treatable condition that affects the brain and behavior. Recovery from substance use and mental health disorders include individualized, intentional sustained efforts to improve wellness. Across the country, communities are moving away from outdated models on substance use and mental illness, toward understanding that chronic conditions require compassion, connection, and long-term support.
Yet, stigma around behavioral health remains widespread. It fuels discrimination, discourages help-seeking, and adds another layer of burden for individuals, families, and even health care providers.
The “Change the Narrative” campaign, led by the University of Colorado College of Nursing, the Las Animas-Huerfano District Health Department, and community partners, aims to raise awareness of shared experiences with substance use and mental health.
This website was created to raise awareness about SUD, reduce stigma through people‑first language, and promote local strategies for prevention, treatment, recovery, and community resilience. Our toolkit offers practical information and tools to strengthen capacity for stigma-reduction, communication, and recovery-supportive action.
By addressing barriers to local resources, the campaign empowers and educates individuals to foster positive change in Las Animas and Huerfano counties.
The opioid crisis continues to impact families and communities across the country, especially in rural and underserved areas.
Our goal: Provide data, raise understanding, change the narrative, and share solutions.
What is Substance Use Disorder (SUD)?
SUD refers to the inability to control the use of a substance—including drugs or alcohol—despite harmful consequences. It impacts individuals, families, and entire communities. Understanding the scope and drivers of use helps us act early and effectively.
Key Facts
- Starting before age 15 makes youth five times more likely to develop SUD.
- Teen years are the most vulnerable for initiation.
- Injection drug use increases risk of HIV and overdose.
- Early opioid/alcohol use links to sexual risk behaviors and violence.
